Cottage Preschool’s Neighborhood Walk

October 16, 2014 by · 1 Comment

Hello Families!

Here are the photos from our neighborhood walk on September 25th. The children enjoyed exploring the different parts of our neighborhood; we spotted lots of letters on street signs and numbers on houses and cars. We also talked about what different street signs mean, as well as practiced some safety rules like looking all ways before crossing the street and always walking with an adult. We also talked about leaves, trees, colors and more of what we see in nature. Neighborhood walks are a great way to help your child connect to their community and learn so much!

We visited a pond, then a small neighborhood playground, and finally, the kids favorite–THE TUNNEL!

First Week in the Cottage Preschool 2014-2015!

September 16, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

I can’t believe the first week is done! The transition to preschool is going well for the new cottage preschoolers as they had fun exploring the classroom and playgrounds during their first week at Gretchen’s House Traver. Each day both Emily and Ashley’s family groups explored a different area of the classroom, and were able to play on the preschool and cottage playgrounds. Exploration of the materials is important for the children to become comfortable with their new environment as it can be an overwhelming process. For the next few weeks we will continue to explore the materials as well as get to know one another.

We start each large group time with a “Hello Song” so we can learn everyone’s names. Every day more and more kids are joining in and singing along! We have also started to add songs to our songbook, and so far have sang “Old MacDonald,” “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” and “The Wheels on the Bus.” Singing familiar songs helps children feel more comfortable with singing along and participating in an unfamiliar environment.

Emily and I are very excited for this year, and we have had so much fun already getting to know the children! We can’t wait to see what the year will bring! :)

The week our driveway was paved!

July 11, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

As I’m sure you are aware, our driveway at Gretchen’s House Traver was just repaved!  The children in our preschool classroom were fascinated to see all the different kinds of trucks, equipment, and workers.  They spent a lot of time observing what was happening and were even able to talk to a few workers and take a look at some of the equipment up close! What may have seemed like an inconvenient construction process turned out to be an amazing learning experience for the preschoolers!

When the digger trucks arrived at school that first day the children were glued to our fence asking questions and making observations about what they were seeing!
The next day the asphalt trucks came to lay down the new road.  We watched from our patio!
“That truck has fire in it!” Alex noticed about the asphalt trucks.
The workers parked this roller truck on our patio and let the kids come and take a closer look.  He explained that it was his job to drive the truck and roll out the asphalt!

Last but not least, the parking lot stripers! The kids were amazed by the machine that painted our parking spots!

Such an exciting and interesting week!

This week in preschool!

Wow! We had such a fun filled week!

On Wednesday we had a water day. The preschoolers, and the teachers came to school ready to have some fun in the sun… well… more like clouds, but that didn’t disappoint us!

“This is the BEST DAY EVER!” – Martin and Jack H.

We also went on a walk on Friday, to collect beautiful things that we found in nature.  While we were on our walk we stopped and admired a beautiful crane that was in the duck pond across from our school.  We also were able to run up and roll down a big hill. We really enjoyed our walk.

We really learned a lot during all of our explorations. We can’t wait to show you what we’ll do next week!

What we’ve been up to in preschool!

June 25, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

These past few months have been very busy to say the least!  With new teachers coming in and old teachers moving away, you might worry that these changes could be an obstacle to learning for our preschoolers… but instead they’ve shown us how resilient they are!  We’ve been having so much fun and learning new things everyday!

Since the weather kept us inside so often this winter, we made it a point to really start exploring nature and the outdoors when the weather got a little warmer!  We have been practicing how to be “respectful listeners” on walks and how to keep our bodies safe.  Here are some photos of some of the things we’ve explored and learned about outside this spring:

Along with exploring the outdoors, we’ve been learning a lot inside our classroom too!  We’ve been working on different things such as coloring under the table, creating obstacle courses, painting masterpieces, and carefully building complex block structures:

This is just a taste of what we have been up to recently.  Now that I’ve adjusted to the routine and program, I’ll post more frequently! We’ve been having so much fun and can’t wait to keep exploring and learning!

Firefighters and Tornado Warning Excite Young 5s!

May 21, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Dear Parents of Traver Young Fives,

It has been an exciting May so far! At the very end of April we had some Ann Arbor Firefighters visit our center and show their gear and truck to us. A few days later we talked about the possibilities of tornados and what we have to do in case we have a Tornado Warning. Good thing we talked about it, because on Monday May 12 we had real-life Tornado warnings! We heard the Tornado alarms and were instructed to get into our safe spaces, so we did! We stopped play, the kids all quickly and calmly got over into our mini-tornado bunker and got into the safety positions we had taught them. We had to stay in our safe space for quite a while, so we broke out some transition toys, books and had a snack. Our thanks to parents Iris, Ute and Kelly for gracefully joining in our tornado safety positions and reassuring the children. All the Young 5s were so brave and calm and helpful to us and each other during the Tornado warning! I was taking it all very seriously so I didn’t stop to take any pictures, but I’ll leave you with some photos from the firefighters visit. Be well!

The Cottage Preschoolers love fire trucks!

May 2, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

After an exciting month of fun and a field trip to the planetarium, Traver wrapped up the Month of the Young Child with a visit from some firemen and a firetruck. The Cottage Preschoolers have been very interested in firetrucks lately,  so this was a perfect way to end the month! Some of the children asked questions, and most really enjoyed the opportunity to touch the fireman’s uniform. Of course the best part was hearing the sirens at the end!

Have a great weekend!

Young Fives April’s Done, was so much fun!

May 1, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

What a great April we had in Young Fives! April was the Month of the Young Child and in that spirit many parents donated food to fill our barrel and help the needy. Food Gatherers thanks you! We made art, displayed our art, had a book fair, acquired some new books for the classroom and had some great field trips! We went to Jungle Java, Placid Way Park,  did yoga, and went to Logan to hear some 4th Grade music!

Parents, please start thinking about scheduling Teacher Conferences with us, we will be doing conferences in person, after school on the days of May 19, 21, and 28. Please look for conference sign-up sheets in the classroom soon!

Also, on Thursday May 15 and Friday May 16 the Upper parking lot and driveway will be closed for re-paving, so please anticipate having to park in the lower Staff parking lot, and walking through the playgrounds to drop off your children for those two days. Sorry for the inconvenience! Finally, a picture to express how April went for the Young Fives…

Yep, that about sums it up. Be well! – Neal

The Cottage Preschoolers do Yoga!

April 18, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

On Tuesday Gretchen’s House Traver welcomed Y is for Yoga  author  Anita B. Adhikary in to teach us all about yoga! Yoga is great for children’s physical development and health by helping them relieve stress, and develop flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. The children had a lot of fun and worked very hard at trying the poses!
